Disclaimer

This site explains how basement water behaves around Columbus. It does not diagnose any particular house. Revised November 2026.

General information only

Two basements with the same wet stain can have different causes: a failed footer drain, a shrinkage crack, a window well that fills, a downspout emptying at the wall, a sewer backup or plain condensation. Wall material, soil, grading, past repairs and the age of the drainage all change the answer. Reading a page here is no substitute for someone looking at your walls.

Cost figures

Ranges on the cost pages describe typical central Ohio jobs. Linear feet of wall, depth, access, finished surfaces, wall condition and permit fees move the real figure. The number on your written estimate is the one that applies.

Structural questions

Horizontal cracks, stair-step cracking, bowing walls and walls that have shifted can point to soil pressure that needs an engineer. Pages here mention those signs so you know to ask; they are not an assessment of any wall.

Plumbing and sewer issues

Backups from floor drains and sewer connections are plumbing matters handled by licensed plumbers in Ohio. Where a page discusses them, it does so to help you tell them apart from groundwater.

Insurance

Whether a policy pays for water damage depends on its wording and the cause of the loss. Nothing here is a coverage opinion; your agent and insurer decide.

Photographs

Images illustrate the conditions and methods described on each page. They are not records of a particular customer's job.

Outcomes and warranties

A well-built system lowers the risk of water entering; it cannot change rainfall, soil or how a house is maintained. Warranty terms are only those written into the agreement for your job and any manufacturer terms on equipment.

Links and corrections

Links to outside sites are offered for convenience, and we do not control their content. If you spot an error here, tell us at hello@capitalcitywaterproofing.com or (380) 261-2333 and it will be fixed.

If water is rising now

Keep out of standing water that may reach outlets, cords or appliances. If the breaker panel is reachable from a dry spot, switch off the basement circuits; if not, leave it and call the power company. Call 911 for any immediate danger, then call us.
